Be Prepared to Share More Than You Expect

Writing a book is a major undertaking: You’re demanding much of the reader/bookbuyer, to devote time (and money) to hear your story, your side of things, your view of the world…so you need to provide them with something of real substance. That means you need to go deep. It may require you to open personal doors you haven’t opened in a long time. (Ever?) Even business books, including many of the very best ones, often rely on personal experiences, formative failures, early mistakes, or surprising turning points. You won’t expose anything you’re not comfortable sharing publicly, of course (it’s your book, after all), but you do need to give your ghostwriter enough material to understand the full picture. The best ghostwriters are like the best lawyers: They’d rather know all there is to know, while not using some (or most) of it, rather than not knowing what would have helped them do their job better.
Think of it as providing context. A ghostwriter can only work with the information you share. Hold back too much and the book will lack depth and texture; it may even feel thin or disconnected. When you trust your ghostwriter with the fuller version of events, they can help you decide what belongs on the page and what serves only as background understanding. Often the stories or details you always thought were unimportant or irrelevant are precisely the ones that bring your message to life.
Confidentiality is a core part of the relationship. A professional ghostwriter treats your conversations as private. (And if you want them to sign an NDA, that’s never a problem.) They are not there to judge. They are there to understand. The more complete the information you provide, the better equipped they are to write a book that feels grounded, credible, human. Your unique story. The ghostwriter brings both discretion and perspective. They know how to separate what is essential from what is distracting. They know how to identify the threads that connect your experiences to your message. They know how to translate your stories into clarity and meaning for the reader.
Sharing generously at the beginning saves time, strengthens trust and leads to a far richer final manuscript. You bring openness. The ghostwriter brings discernment. Together, you build a book with real substance.
