How Do You Want to Sound? (And Be Honest…)

One of the most important things you bring to the writing partnership is your voice. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a writer, you have an unmistakable way of speaking. (We all do.) Perhaps you are direct and concise. Perhaps you’re a natural-born storyteller. Perhaps you tend to explain ideas through examples or analogies. Whatever your rhythm, the good ghostwriter captures it, giving your book authenticity.
So before you begin, reflect on how you want readers to “hear” you. Do you want your book to feel like a conversation? Do you prefer a more formal tone? Should it reflect the formality of a boardroom presentation, or the more casual tone you may adopt with colleagues and subordinates? There is no right approach, only the one that fits you.
A ghostwriter’s job is to capture your voice with accuracy and care. They listen closely during interviews (and re-listening to recordings, for subtleties they may have missed the first time, while gathering the bigger story). They pick up your phrasing, your humor, your tempo, your tendencies. Do you have a couple of go-to phrases that are so you? The ghostwriter watches for patterns in how you explain things and how you tell stories. A good ghostwriter is not there to impose their own style. They shape your ideas and tell your story in a way that elevates your voice.
If you have particular aims for how you want to sound, let the ghostwriter know that. If you dislike jargon, say so. If you want to sound more conversational than corporate, say so. If you know you have a tendency to hedge or ramble and you want the book to sound sharper than you do in casual conversation, let the ghostwriter know that.
When both sides understand the tone you’re aiming for, the writing process becomes far smoother. You bring the intention, the ghostwriter the skill to execute it. Together, you arrive at a voice that reads effortlessly while remaining unmistakably yours.
