It’s a Partnership, Not a Transaction - 2M Communications

Hiring a ghostwriter is a collaboration, not a transaction. That sounds soft. It’s actually the single biggest predictor of whether the book you end up with is the book you wanted.

It’s tempting to think the hard part ends at the contract. Hand over the material, disappear for a few months, review a manuscript. That’s how it works with most vendors. Not here. You bring the vision, the stories, and the judgment about what matters. The ghostwriter brings craft, structure, discipline, and an outsider’s perspective on material you’re far too close to. Neither side can supply the other’s half.

So agree on the essentials before anyone starts drafting: the purpose, the reader, the shape of the book, and what “finished” means. Enthusiasm is not alignment. Ten months later, when a chapter feels wrong and neither of you can say why, that early agreement is usually where the answer is.

Then protect the rhythm. Interviews on a schedule, chapters delivered on a schedule, feedback returned on a schedule. Momentum is fragile, and two skipped reviews become a stalled quarter faster than you’d think.

Be specific when you respond. “I don’t love it” tells your writer nothing. “This chapter loses me on page three, and the merger story doesn’t belong here” tells them everything. And expect pushback in return. A good ghostwriter will challenge a story you love, or a point you’ve made so often you no longer hear how it lands on someone hearing it for the first time. That’s a large part of what you’re paying for. A writer who agrees with everything is protecting your comfort, not your book.

One more thing: your ghostwriter is a full partner in the room and invisible outside it. Discretion isn’t a courtesy in this business, it’s the work. Which is why, at 2M Communications, we spend as much time on fit as on credentials. Get the match right and you finish with more than a manuscript. Most authors tell us they finish with something they didn’t expect: a much clearer sense of what they actually think.
