FAQ

Below are the questions we are asked most often by business leaders and public figures considering a book. If yours is not here, get in touch. Consultations are free.

What does a ghostwriter actually do?

A ghostwriter turns your ideas, experience, and voice into a finished manuscript. They conduct in-depth interviews, research and organize your material, build a structure, and write the chapters. What they do not do is supply the ideas. The thinking, the stories, and the point of view are yours. Their craft is in shaping that material into a book a reader will follow from the first page to the last. The best ones also work as a thought partner, pushing your thinking and catching the places where an argument does not land.

How do I know whether I need a ghostwriter?

Most leaders start out planning to write the book themselves, and a few should. You likely need a ghostwriter if you have a strong concept but cannot sustain drafting momentum, if you explain ideas well aloud but struggle to get them onto the page, or if you want a book that meets professional publishing standards without surrendering months to editorial mechanics. Recognizing that is not a concession. It is a decision that gets you from idea to finished book considerably faster.

How does 2M Communications match an author with the right ghostwriter?

Matchmaking is at the heart of what we do. We represent approximately 100 writers, all published by the Big Five houses, and we pair each author with writers who fit their subject, their goals, and the way they work. Credentials are the starting point, not the decision. Temperament, tone, pace, and chemistry matter just as much, because a capable writer who is wrong for you produces a competent book rather than your book.

Will the book still sound like me?

Yes, and that is the central test of a good ghostwriter. A skilled writer listens closely during interviews, re-listens to the recordings for what they missed, and picks up your phrasing, your humor, your tempo, and the patterns in how you explain things. The goal is a manuscript that sounds like you on your best day. It helps enormously to say up front how you want to come across. If you dislike jargon, say so. If you want to read as conversational rather than corporate, say that too.

How much of my own time will the book require?

Less than writing it yourself, but not nothing. A ghostwriter can write the book; they cannot think for you. You need to be available for interviews, to review chapters promptly, and to make decisions about direction, tone, and content. A professional knows how to get the most from the time you give them. Many authors find that the interviewing and reviewing process sharpens their own thinking in ways they did not anticipate.

What does it cost to hire a ghostwriter?

Fees vary considerably, and the honest answer is that it depends on the book. The main factors are the writer’s track record, how much research and original reporting the book requires, how many interviews it takes to gather the material, and how quickly you need it finished. Where a traditional publisher is involved, an advance may cover part or all of the cost. We discuss numbers openly in the first conversation rather than making you ask.

Will anyone know I worked with a ghostwriter?

Only if you want them to. Confidentiality is a core part of this business, not a courtesy extended on request. Credit arrangements vary: your name alone, your name with the writer’s, or an acknowledgment. That gets settled at the start, on your terms, and a professional ghostwriter will never be the person who tells anyone they wrote your book.

What kinds of books do you work on?

A wide range. Business and leadership, memoir and autobiography, health and medicine, politics and law, faith and spirituality, science, parenting, sports, food, entertainment, and pop culture, along with nonprofit and corporate projects. On the corporate side that includes founder books, leadership and big-idea books, and company histories for Fortune 500 companies, technology firms, law firms, investment houses, hedge funds, and institutions.

Can I use AI to write or research my book?

For research, carefully. For writing, no. AI can summarize, gather, and organize in minutes rather than days, and that is a real advantage. It can also misstate a timeline, blend sources, or present something false with complete confidence. Treat it as a junior assistant, never a final authority, and tell your ghostwriter exactly what you gathered from it, including sources and assumptions. Books carry authority. Readers assume you did your homework, and one bad fact can undermine an entire argument.

What should I have figured out before I contact you?

One thing: why you want this book. It does not need to be polished, only real. Is it to expand your thought leadership? Cement a legacy? Open doors for speaking engagements? Support a company mission? That purpose gives the entire project its backbone, and it is the one thing a ghostwriter cannot supply for you. Everything else, including structure, format, publishing path, and whether a book is even the right vehicle, is what the first conversation is for. Consultations are free.
